Basildon & Pitsea 1st v Burnham Sports CC 1st XI on Sat 17 Aug 2019 at 1pm
Burnham Sports CC Won By 30 runs
Match report
Burnham Sports 1st XI fought back from a difficult position to secure a win away to Basildon and Pitsea on Saturday. In doing so they sealed promotion to Division One with two games to spare as closest rivals Eastwood were beaten by Woodham Mortimer. Sports claimed eight wickets in the second innings for 61 runs in a remarkable turnaround to give them their 13th win in 16 games with only one fixture rained off.
Having batted first and accumulated 206-5 from 45 overs, a competitive total in difficult batting conditions, Sports were confident of their chances of victory. However, Basildon openers Singleton (30) and Ayres (40) gave the home side a solid platform, putting on 67 runs for the opening partnership. By the time both were dismissed, Basildon had reached 115-2 and it looked like Burnham were on course for their third loss this season.
The game was turned on its head though by Burnham’s David Bridge (10-2-38-2) and Joel Whittaker (6-0-18-2), as they claimed three wickets in four balls to leave Basildon reeling on 115-5, and exposing the lower order to what has been the best bowling attack in the division.
Fuad Ahmed (6-1-18-2) claimed two wickets of his own, one thanks to a diving catch from captain Tom Silvester, whilst Robin Whittaker and Jack Silvester helped to finish off the tail before a run out ended Basildon’s innings on 176, 30 short of Sports’ total.
Earlier, Bridge (41) had shared a fine opening partnership with Paul Green (45) on a damp pitch that had uneven bounce against a strong Basildon bowling attack. Joel Whittaker added 36 before being bowled trying accelerate the scoring in the latter stages of the innings, and Fuad Ahmed scored an entertaining 32 not out from just 14 balls, including 20 off the final over of the innings to see Burnham to 206-5 from their 45 overs. Lambert (9-0-43-2) and Thompson (10-2-30-1) were the best of the Basildon bowlers.
There are two fixtures remaining this season; next week the team travel to Eastwood and then host Ingatestone at home for the final game. With second place and promotion secured, they will look to overhaul Noak Hill at the top of the table, but would need the top-placed side to lose both of their remaining games to have a chance of winning the league title.
Burnham’s 2nd XI did not have a game this week due to their opponents withdrawing, and it looks likely that next week’s fixture against Great Baddow will also be cancelled as they are set to withdraw from the league. This means their season has effectively ended aside from some friendly fixtures. However, their position as Division 8 champions remains, regardless of the cancelled games. The team, up to now, have secured 12 wins from 15 games, just one loss and two cancellations due to rain to win the league comfortably and secure promotion to Division 7.
