Tom Silvester profile

  • Tom "'The Cat'" Silvester
  • Unique, at least to us. He bowls left-handed but bats right handed. We've had ambidextrous players in the pas, and Matt Mears (bowls with right, bats with left) is also among our number, but I cannot recall one who has done things this way round. It's hard for us non-ambidextrous souls to comprehend, but my research reveals that most of this clan bowl right-handed but bat with left. Jimmy Anderson, Richard Hadlee and Graham Dilley spring to mind. Some are real show-offs. Brian Close, apparently, could bat right or left handed and played golf either way off 7. Anyway, Tom attended Colchester Grammar and so one day we will have to sit him down with Tim Lornie (goes to KEGS) and establish  which of these fine schools in the superior. Not sure if Tom, who now works for the Bank of London, will write his answers using his right or left hand. Perhaps he switches when getting tired. Both his names have cat connertations - think Tom & Jerry (haven't seen that on the box for a while - probably not PC these days) and Silvester the cat. Oh and one final thing, a third of the world's best fencers are left-handed. So, Tom, if you ever have a go at this sport, grab the foil in the your left hand. Big advantage, apparently. Smashing attitude on the cricket pitch and ambitious: he tells me he wants to cycle from Lands End to John O'Groats and swim the channel. Not on the same day.
