Chignal v Burnham Sports CC 1st XI on Sat 09 May 2009 at 1.30
Burnham Sports CC Lost By 1 Run
Match report
It was a case of so close and yet so far for Burnham Sports as they suffered an agonising one-run defeat away to Chignal.
Sports staged a remarkable fight back in the T.Rippon Mid Essex League first division fixture but, with a famous victory in their grasp, lost their last wicket with one ball remaining.
Chasing 197 to win, Burnham collapsed to 70 for seven and seemed destined to suffer a humiliating loss. But the home side had reckoned without Andy Stephens and Robin Whittaker, who combined to set up a grandstand finish.
The pair, batting at 8 and 9 respectively, put on an eighth wicket club record stand of 118 to take their team within two hits of success. But, with victory in their nostrils, Stephens was caught on the cover boundary and was swiftly followed by Dominic Whittaker, who was the next batsman in.
That left the last pair of Robin, the youngest of three Whittaker brothers in the Burnham team, and Karl Barnes requiring eight to win off nine balls. They had reduced that target to two off the same number of balls when Barnes, attempting a quick leg bye that would have levelled the scores, was run out yards short of his ground.
Stephens and Whittaker Jnr deserved better for their heroic efforts. The pair began cautiously but flourished as time went on and added 78 in their final dozen overs together. Stephens hit nine boundaries to all parts on his way to 74, with 17-year-old Whittaker, showing a maturity beyond his years, ending unbeaten on 42.
Burnham’s earlier batting had been brittle with the notable exception of Ali Allchin, who thumped four massive straight sixes before being bowled for 35.
The first half of the game had also been topsy turvy - Chignal subsiding from 109 for one to 196 for nine from their 45 overs. Joel Whittaker (four for 25) sparked their slide, with Allchin (three for 33 from nine overs) , Stephens (one for 14 from 11 overs) and stand-in skipper Paul Green also emerging with credit.
Sports again spilled several crucial catches, although, in fairness, Chignal later returned the favour.
