  • If only the world were full of people like Brian 'The Snail' Leech. It would be a peaceful place, a happy place, a place with a warm glow. It would be a world where you could let your kids play outside all day without any threat of them coming to a mischief. A planet where you could leave your front door open and not worry about it being ransacked by the time you returned. A universe where you could walk home after closing time and not be anxious about making eye contact with the guys wearing hoods walking towards you. The one downside, of course, and there has to be one because nobody is perfect, is that Brian is prone to spend 10 minutes describing something which, in truth, should only take a minute. None of us think any less of him for it, though, and it's a small price to be pay for being in the company of a genuinely nice guy. Brian is nudging towards 50 and, I guess, has been playing for the club since the 1980s. The years all tend to blur into one, but, when I've got a minute free (OK, 10 minutes) I'll check it with him. He can swing the ball a mile and keeps things simple with the bat - if it's on the stumps try and hit it for 4; if it's off the stumps try and hit it for 4. There is a lot to be said for this positive approach. Has always been mustard in the outfield (once went 13 years without dropping a catch) but, unfortunately, a recurring knee injury restricted his appearances in 2009 and 2011. As for his nickname of The Snail, well, you've got Serge Danot to thank for that. Serge who, I hear you ask? Google him.
