  • Neil "Finbar, Hairy, Badger" Saunders
  • Began playing for the club since the early 1980s but, remarkably, can recall every moment of every match that he has ever played in; or even heard about. Does he embellish the tales? Are some of them, in fact, complete fabrication? Well, frankly, who cares. We'd all despair if Finny didn't regail us with a chapter of a match that took place on a cloudy day (some sunny intervals) in May 1985 on a pitch that was dry and prone to keeping low at one end. My one fear is that he will one day drown because they say your whole life flashes before you if suffering this awful fate. Poor old Finny will be flapping around in the water for a fortnight getting glimpses of cricket before anything else appears on his showreel. In his early playing days, Finny's hair was jet black and, before getting the yips, he bowled booming away swingers. These days, he's grey all over and has to shave his whole body five times a day to prevent opposition teams presuming we have a chimp in our team. Perhaps he is a chimp. He does seem to be eating an increasing amount of pre-match, during-match and post-match bananas. His habit of padding up, meanwhile, has taken on epidemic proportions. Can batsmen also get the yips? Is he a yip all-rounder? Puts in invaluable hours behind the scenes to keep things ticking over and simply adores the game. Even skippering the 2's for two years (in 2010 and 2011) could not take the shine off him. Prone to mumbling/moaning and focusing on worst-case scenarios, but don't hold that against him.  Also suffers an unusual amount of freak injuries - suffered the latest of these at nets in late March, 2012,when the rubber on his bat flicked back (he was meddling with a floppy bit at the top) and gave him a fat lip. Also suffered "shock" after hitting massive straight 6 at Rettendon a few months later.
