Little Waltham v Burnham Sports CC 1st XI on Sat 07 Aug 2010 at 1.30pm
Burnham Sports CC Won by 9 wickets
Match report
Karl Barnes grabbed a career-best haul as the golden oldies of Burnham Sports continued their summer of success at Little Waltham.
The veteran swing bowler, 44, finished with figures of 9.2-3-11-5 as Waltham were bundled out for 76 on a pitch where big scores are usually routine.
His haul came just a week after Grant Smith, 39, had made a personal best 133 not out against Tillingham and it was only last month that Andy Stephens, 42, picked up nine wickets against Rayleigh.
"There's plenty of young talent in our team but, at the moment, it's the more senior players who are really enjoying themselves," Barnes said after his match-winning haul. "The pitch at Waltham is renowned as the best in the league and we were anticipating a long afternoon but conditions favoured the bowlers and we took advantage.
"My first ball was a poor one and disappeared to the boundary but, after that, I got into a rhythm. I've had five-wicket pick-ups in the past - but never for so few runs."
The previous 1st XI match at The Street had yielded 631 runs but, after being invited to bat on a damp wicket, Waltham buckled.
Barnes stole the show but Robin Whittaker (6-3-16-2) also proved a handful, with Ali Allchin, Andy Stephens and Jamie Hamilton sharing the other wickets. Sports also took some sharp catches, notably Jalal Ahmed's effort at first slip to dismiss James Coyle, who top-scored with 25.
In reply, Sports took just 49 balls to reach their modest target - the quickest run chase in the history of the club.
Smith (30) and Joel Whittaker (23) were undefearted at the end after Jalal had made a brisk 22. The 35-minute innings included 13 fours and two sixes - 64 in boundaries.
