Burnham Sports CC 2nd XI v Broomfield 2nd on Sat 01 May 2021 at 1pm
Burnham Sports CC Lost by 3 wickets

Match report First league game since the 10th Aug 2019 & it probably showed. Captain Bayliss (supporting a bloodied ear courtesy of Matt in the nets) won the toss and continued with our bat first policy which was successful during the 2019 league campaign. All did not start well as the usually reliable Smudger nicked off first ball in the 1st over, We all looked on shocked, non more than Matt who accepted a bet that Smudger would be out first ball (£5 at 100/1) thats £500 i fully expect Matt to pay up. Finbar in at 3 scored a steady 19 before being bowled by the young left arm bowler, Finbars moans about the bowling and wides that weren't given started as he walked past the square leg umpire and finished around 7.30pm that evening. Glen waddled to the wicket at 4 & with his usual style of hitting the ball at the last possible second smacked a couple of fours before missing a straight one off Broomfields skipper R.Baker. Joel in at 5 got off to a slow start and struggled to time the ball early on but soon found his usual attacking rhythm to be unbeaten on 70. Meanwhile quietly going about his business at the other end Simsy was looking comfortable on 35 before being caught spectacularly at point. Matt joined Joel and they put on 106 for the 5th wicket, Matt eventually out for a breezy 43. Jon (0) & Val (4) both dismissed in the last over. Daisy in at 9 & knocking the ball backward of square for a single of the first ball promptly fell arse over tit halfway up the wicket probably in shock that he hit the ball. Burnham ended on 226-7 a par score on that wicket. Broomfield got off to a quick start which they maintained throughout their innings. The bowling showing signs of rust as both openers looking to punish any bad balls which there were a few. Finbar took the first wicket, a dubious LBW, maybe the volume of Finbars appeal having something to do with it or maybe the wide given by the umpire the ball before which Finbar didn't take too well (staring at the umpire shaking his head while laughing sarcastically) may have helped. The bowlers tried hard without ever looking like taking a wicket. Sawyer & Atkins took full advantage of the wayward bowling and by the time Val & Joel removed them the damage was done and Broomfield got home with 3 overs to spare. A good effort & hopefully this game will shake the rust off for the upcoming matches.
