Match report Burnham Sports 1st XI inched closer to promotion from T-Rippon Division Two with a convincing victory at home over Woodham Mortimer on Saturday.
The visitors won the toss and elected to bat on a very windy day at Millfields. This decision did not pay off for them at first, as Burnham’s pace bowlers Robin Whittaker (10-3-24-1) and Fuad Ahmed (5-2-4-2) bowled with venom with the wind behind their backs. Jack Silvester, who claimed 1 wicket, produced an accurate spell with the new ball at the other end to restrict Mortimer’s scoring, leaving the visitors in trouble at 72 for 5 after 30 overs.
Andy Stephens (5-0-18-3) and Tom Silvester (6-0-23-3) finished off Woodham’s innings and restricted them to just 119 from 40 overs. Harness (30) top scored for Mortimer late in their innings, however was bowed by Stephens to halt hopes of pushing their total towards 150.
Chasing the total was a formality despite a difficult batting pitch, thanks to a half century from in-form Jamie Hamilton, who is Burnham’s leading run scorer this year. He shared a partnership of 61 with Ahmed, who was not out with 20 runs, to steer Burnham to their 13th victory of the season.
It was not all cheer for Sports though, as batsmen Paul Green and Neil Saunders were forced to retire hurt. Saunders suffered an Achilles injury and will miss the remainder of the season.
The win leaves Burnham second in Division Two with three games remaining. Next week they travel to fourth place Basildon and Pitsea and will be looking to avenge defeat earlier in the season, before facing promotion rivals Eastwood the following week.
