Match report Burnham Sports 1st XI extended their winning run on Saturday with a convincing victory at home to Brookweald in T-Rippon Division 2.
After winning the toss and opting to bowl in overcast conditions, Burnham’s opening bowlers Robin Whittaker (10-2-23-2) and Jack Silvester (6.2-0-28-2) struck early to leave the visitors under pressure at 11-2 after the opening 8 overs.
Brookweald fought back however; Wajid (24) and Sumnash (42), who top scored for the visitors, formed a valuable partnership to steady the innings, but once Whittaker and Sports’ spinner David Bridge had dismissed them, Brookweald crumpled under the pressure applied by Burnham’s bowlers.
Bridge went on to claim a second, whilst Matthew Mears claimed two wickets at the other end, to leave Brookweald reeling. Silvester returned to the attack to claim the final wicket, as Sports dismissed the visitors for just 134 after 40 overs.
In reply, opener Paul Green excelled for Sports as he scored a fine 77 not out to see the home side to a comfortable victory in just the 23rd over of the innings. The right-hander was not troubled by any of Brookweald’s bowlers as he struck 14 fours and a 6 to secure the win in commanding fashion.
Robin Whittaker helped see the win home, striking 20 not out to steer Burnham to their 9th victory from 11 games so far this season, leaving them second in the division.
Next week, the firsts travel to bottom side Rayleigh and will be aiming for their 5th win in a row.
