Noak Hill Taverners 1st v Burnham Sports CC 1st XI on Sat 06 Jul 2019 at 1pm
Burnham Sports CC Won By 19 Runs
Match report
Burnham Sports produced their best performance of the season so far to beat table-topping Noak Hill Taverners on Saturday.
Sports travelled to the Romford side looking to avenge defeat in the opening game of the season and knowing they could get close to Noak Hill at the top of T-Rippon Division One.
Having won the toss, Burnham opted to bat and skipper Tom Silvester dug in with 51 to anchor the innings. He shared an 82-run partnership with Robin Whittaker (76) who scored his second successive half-century following 63 not out last week at Ingatestone. In-form James Hamilton added late fireworks with 42 not out, off just 26 balls, to propel Sports to a lofty 248-5 off their 45 overs. Zeeshan (6-0-23-2) was the best of the Noak Hill bowlers, who failed to get the most out of an uneven wicket.
Noak Hill made a rapid start to their run chase thanks to Gufran (79) before Jack Silvester came on to bowl for Sports. After bowling Gufran he tore through Noak Hill’s middle order, dislodging the off-stump of two more batsmen and claiming an lbw as he finished with figures of 10-3-33-4, a spell that swung the game heavily in Sports’ favour.
Returning bowler Fuad Ahmed claimed a couple of wickets to further peg the home side back, but Rafique (41) and Hamza (40) upped the run rate in the last 15 overs to put pressure on Burnham. With the required rate at 10 per over for the last eight overs Sports kept their cool as they managed to bowl out Noak Hill for 229, 19 runs short of the required total, with four balls remaining.
The win takes the 1st XI up to second in Division One, still chasing Noak Hill and in a close battle for second with Eastwood. Next week they face Brookweald at home.
