Ingatestone 1st v Burnham Sports CC 1st XI on Sat 29 Jun 2019 at 1pm
Burnham Sports CC Won By 7 wickets
Match report
A superb unbeaten 155-run partnership shared by Jamie Hamilton and Robin Whittaker led Burnham Sports to a clinical seven-wicket victory over Ingatestone on Saturday.
Hamilton continued his good run of form with 88 not out, including 20 off a single over. He and Whittaker (63*) came together with Burnham on a score of 41-3, having lost early wickets in their pursuit of Ingatestone’s first innings total of 195, but soon started to score freely. It took them just 23 overs to amass their partnership and steer Burnham to their seventh victory in nine games, leaving them third in T-Rippon Division Two at the halfway point of the season.
Earlier, having won the toss and surprisingly electing to bowl in the hot conditions, Burnham managed to contain Ingatestone on a good batting pitch. After Blackman (45*) retired hurt and Grobbler(33) was dismissed by Matthew Mears, Sports’ bowlers came into the ascendency. Spinner Tom Silvester bowled with excellent flight to extract turn from the pitch and caused problems for the middle order. He finished with figures of 10-5-3-22, by far the most economical spell of the day. Burnham’s other bowlers were rotated in the heat and shared around the wickets – Andy Stephens, Hamilton and Joel Whittaker all picked up a wicket each.
Ingatestone reached 195-7 off their 45 overs, in part thanks to a late 30 not out from Chapman, but Burnham knew that the pitch was a good one to bat on and it only took 35 overs for them to pass Ingatestone’s score with ease, justifying the decision to bowl first.
Next week, Sports travel to Noak Hill Taverners, who currently sit top of the league. Sports lost their opening game of the season to the Romford side and will be looking to overturn that defeat.
