Burnham Sports CC 1st XI v Eastwood 1st on Sat 22 Jun 2019 at 1pm
Burnham Sports CC Won By 5 Wickets

Match report A superb 79-run partnership between Neil Wade and Jack Silvester saw Burnham Sports 1st XI return to winning ways, with a 5 wicket win in a thrilling encounter at Millfields against Division 2 leaders Eastwood.
Chasing 179 set by the visitors, Silvester, batting at 7, joined Wade at the crease with Sports under pressure at 103 for 5 in the 28th over. Sports had just lost key wickets in the form of Jamie Hamilton (13) and Joel Whittaker (26), after opener David Bridge (20) saw Sports get off to a quick start.
The pair, though, turned the game in Burnham’s favour in the second half of the innings, setting the tone early on in their partnership with sharp running between the wickets, and putting the pressure back on the fielding side.
Silvester was the more ambitious of the two, hitting regular boundaries to ensure the total never stayed out of sight, whilst Wade, who finished unbeaten on 37, provided an anchor to the innings and frustrated the Eastwood bowling attack.
Needing 10 to win from the last two overs, Silvester, who finished not out with 52 runs, sealed the victory by crunching a six and a four to see Burnham over the line and end on 182 for 5.
Captain Tom Silvester commented, “It was a great response this week to our batting collapse last time out. We showed determination under pressure, and credit to Neil and Jack for securing an important win. Hopefully we can build on this win into the second half of the season.”
Earlier, an impressive bowling spell from Andy Stephens gave Sports a good platform to work from. Stephens, who bowled with pace and swing, claimed three wickets and conceded just 31 runs from 9 overs, restricting Eastwood’s run rate.
The ever-reliable Robin Whittaker claimed two wickets for Burnham but Sports could not bowl Eastwood out and they finished on 179 for 9 after their 45 overs.
For Eastwood, C Sutherby (48) and J Hunter (49) provided the main scores of note, with S Huckstepp (28) also contributing at the top of their order. It was their middle and lower order that collapsed, with only 2 other players scoring double figures.
Frustratingly, despite the win, Sports remain fourth in the division. However, they have closed the gap and are only 3 points behind third placed Basildon and Pitsea. Next week, Sports travel to mid-table Ingatestone.
