Match report A superb century from Jamie Hamilton inspired Burnham Sports 1st XI to a second successive victory in T-Rippon Division 2 at home against Rayleigh 2nd XI by 78 runs.
After losing the toss and being sent in to bat first, Sports initially struggled to deal with the bowling of Rayleigh’s Nolde, who claimed three early wickets for the visitors, reducing Sports to 19-3 at one stage.
It was only when Hamilton, batting at number 5, came to the crease that the innings stabilised. After a slow start, he got off the mark with three successive boundaries. From there, Hamilton produced a flawless display on his way to an unbeaten score of 103, smashing three 6’s in the process.
Hamilton formed a valuable partnership with Sports’ wicket keeper Rob Layzell, who showed great composure on his way to 30, before being stumped. The pair managed to put on 81 runs together.
Their efforts saw Sports close their innings on 193 for 8 after 45 overs, a very impressive score after struggling early.
In reply, Rayleigh got off to a solid start in their chase of Sports. Openers Impey and Lynch looked comfortable for the opening 10 overs, putting on 26 together, before an explosive bouncer from Robin Whittaker resulted in Impey being caught.
From there, Sports kicked on in clinical fashion, dismissing the Rayleigh batsmen at regular intervals. Captain Tom Silvester claimed three wickets for Sports, including that of Verinder, who top scored for Rayleigh with 30. Robin Whittaker (8-2-19-2) claimed a further wicket and also a run out, the remaining wickets were shared between Matthew Mears (10-2-23-1), Joel Whittaker (8-0-19-1) and Sports’ man of the match Jamie Hamilton (9-0-29-1). Rayleigh were bowled out for 115 after 40 overs.
The win sees Sports climb to 4th in the division. Next week, Sports travel to High Roding, who currently sit 8th.
