Match report Burnham Sports Cricket Club enjoyed a weekend of double success as both the 1st and 2nd XIs secured wins in their T-Rippon league fixtures on Saturday.
The firsts travelled to Brookweald, who had dropped down from the premier division, looking to bounce back from defeat in their opening game. Sports were asked to bowl first under grey skies and their bowlers– lead by seamer Robin Whittaker – capitalised on the damp conditions. He bowled with pace and aggression on the green wicket to demolish the Brookweald top order, finishing with fine figures of 10-3-19-4. Matthew Mears bowled tidily to pick up a wicket of his own before Andy Stephens (4-0-8-3) continued where Whittaker had left off.
Brookweald were left floundering on 72-8 and the game was firmly in Sports’ control. However, Shah (55) and Hurrell (26*) posted stern resistance as Burnham were frustrated in their hunt for the remaining wickets as the Brentwood side saw out their remaining overs to reach 143-9.
Despite the frustration of not taking the final wicket this total wasn’t enough to cause any problems for Burnham’s batting line up as they cruised to victory with five overs to spare and six wickets in hand. Opener Paul Green made light work of the Brookweald bowling attack on his way to 41, supported by contributions from David Bridge (21) and Jack Silvester (22) before Neil Wade (20*) saw Burnham to victory with a series of boundaries. Baird (7-1-26-2) picked up a couple of wickets in vain for the home side.
