Match report Burnham Sports struggled on the first day of the new cricket season as both the first and second teams slipped to defeat in wet and windy conditions.
The first team played host to Noak Hill Taverners at Millfields in a game shortened to 42 overs per side due to numerous rain breaks. Noak Hill won the toss and opted to put Burnham in to bat, knowing the prospect of worsening weather conditions would play a factor later in the game.
After losing a couple of early wickets Robin Whittaker dug in with 53 to anchor the innings. James Hamilton added 23 before Rob Layzell brought some late impetus to see Burnham reach 164 all out off their 42 overs after losing their 10th wicket with the last ball of the innings. Spinners Asad (7-0-29-2) and Raj (4-0-18-4) did most of the damage for Noak Hill.
The Romford side made a rapid start in their chase of Burnham’s total as the rain returned – making bowling and fielding difficult. Zeshain (110*) made Burnham pay for missed chances in the field as he led the visitors to a 9-wicket victory, Hamilton picking up the sole wicket.
