Burnham Sports CC Won by 30 runs
Match report
Burnham Sports 1st XI finally broke their winless run as they dug out a vital 30-run victory over local rivals Tillingham in T-Rippon Division One on Saturday.
Defending a first innings total of 141, Sports tore through the Tillingham batting line-up, bowling them out for 111 in the 41st over to seal an unlikely victory.
Three wickets from Robin Whittaker and two from Brian Leech left the home side reeling, as they were reduced to 43 for 5 after their opening 20 overs. From this point onwards, the pressure from Sports was relentless; a combination of excellent fielding and quality bowling saw Sports take a further four wickets for 32 runs, Paul Green claiming two with the other two shared between captain Joel Whittaker and Tom Silvester. Tillingham’s final wicket pair of Andy Mee and Louis Barrell were set a monumental task to chase down Sports’ score.
The pair did initially make a good start, and Sports were starting to fear the worst as they passed three figures in the 39th over. However, some excellent fielding from Brian Leech sealed the victory for Sports as Barrell was run out going for a quick single.
“It’s brilliant that we’ve finally won, we fully deserved the victory today for the way we bowled and fielded,” commented Joel Whittaker. “I hope that this win will galvanise us for the second half of the season and we can get on a run of wins.”
The win looked in jeopardy earlier, however, as Sports were bowled out for a lowly 141. Despite a strong opening partnership from Paul Green (48) and Dominic Whittaker (24), things quickly went down hill, as seven wickets were lost for just 24 runs. However, Jamie Hamilton helped bring Sports back into the mix with 32 vital runs to push Sports onto 141. No other batsman managed to break into double figures.
“I’m not really sure what’s gone wrong with our batting,” said captain Whittaker. “Everyone just seems low on confidence and when we lose a wicket, we just collapse. It makes the win bittersweet to be honest; losing 7 wickets for 24 runs is well beyond poor. Hopefully winning will give us some confidence.”
Next week, Sports host Southweald at Millfields. In the reverse fixture, Sports thumped the Brentwood-based side by 138 runs, and will be looking for a repeat performance.
Burnham Sports 2nd XI suffered another defeat as visitors Galleywood proved too strong, beating Sports by 205 runs.
Galleywood won a favourable toss and elected to bat first; they didn’t waste the opportunity, amassing an incredible 330 from their 45 overs.
Despite this, there were some highlights for Sports as youngster Ross Brooks claimed his first wicket for Sports, whilst Glen Bayliss took a remarkable diving catch. Captain Greg Campion bowled well with 5 wickets for 57.
In reply, Sports got off to a positive start at climbing the mountain, as Jon Young, whose 58 runs was his first half-century for Sports, and Steve Sims (23) put on 80 for the opening partnership in the first 17 overs. However, after the pair were dismissed, the rest of the innings ended in familiar fashion, and Sports were all out for 125.
Next week, Sports second XI travel to Goresbrook.
