Springfield 2nd v Burnham Sports CC 1st XI on Sat 24 Jun 2017 at 13:00
Burnham Sports CC Lost by 6 wickets

Match report Burnham Sports slipped to defeat away to Springfield 2nd team in their T Rippon Division One fixture on Saturday despite an improved performance compared to recent weeks.
Sports won the toss and elected to bat on a fast and bouncy wicket with a quick outfield, and it looked like a day for the batsmen. Despite losing an early wicket, a 66-run second wicket partnership from David Bridge (34) and Robin Whittaker (41) steadied Burnham’s innings and they looked set to make a big total.
However, Bridge’s dismissal in the 18th over signalled a change in momentum; Sports became bogged down in the middle part of the innings due to a good bowling spell from Springfield’s Attwell, who claimed three wickets for Springfield for 33 runs off his 10 over spell. Having been on 98-1 when Bridge was dismissed Burnham struggled to 122-5.
In danger of posting a total that would be too easy to chase Burnham needed to show some resistance. Contributions further down the order from Jack Silvester (23), Neil Saunders (16) and Chris Rich (14 not out) helped to bring Sports back into the game and give their bowlers something to defend, as Sports ended their innings on 187 for eight, avoiding a total collapse.
With regular first team captain Joel Whittaker away, vice captain Tom Silvester said, “We were probably about 40 runs short on that wicket, especially considering how quick the outfield was. However, we did well to prevent our innings falling apart and at least we gave ourselves something to bowl at.”
Springfield started their pursuit of Burnham’s below par total aggressively, striking at nearly 10 runs per over for the first seven overs of their innings to bring the game under their control. Springfield’s opening pair of Prudence (60) and Powell (33) took them to 97 until Burnham managed a breakthrough, despite a number of edges off the bat of Powell, none of which fell to Burnham fielders.
Burnham’s spin bowling pairing of Bridge (10-0-40-2) and Paul Green (10-1-42-1) did manage to slow Springfield’s momentum and pick up a couple of wickets to offer Burnham slim hopes of victory, especially as Springfield had a weakened lower order. Silvester picked up another wicket to leave the home side wobbling but ultimately it was not enough as Frost (23*) and Northfield (36*) saw Springfield home in the 35th over of their innings, sealing a six-wicket loss for Burnham.
After the game, Silvester said, “If we had got a couple of early wickets we would have a had a real chance of winning that game, but we have to reflect on the fact that our batting display wasn’t quite good enough. Despite improving on recent weeks we still have a little way to go to be competitive.”
Next week, Burnham’s 1st XI face Rainham at home. Rainham currently sit second in the division and will be a stern test for Burnham who will be looking to turn their season around after five successive defeats.
