Burnham Sports CC 1st XI v Aythorpe Roding 1st on Sat 17 Jun 2017 at 13:00
Burnham Sports CC Lost by 76 runs

Match report A battling half century from Robin Whittaker could not prevent Burnham Sports 1st XI slipping to a 76 run defeat at home against Aythorpe Roding in T-Rippon Division One on Saturday.
Whittaker (50), who shared a 110-run partnership with Jamie Hamilton, (43) helped bring Sports into contention of chasing Aythorpe’s mammoth first innings total of 282, hitting 10 boundaries in the process. Whittaker shone in what was a much-improved batting performance from the side.
Once the pair were dismissed in quick succession by Aythorpe’s Milbank, the remaining Sports batsmen could not form a similar partnership to push on to victory. Rob Layzell (20) and captain Joel Whittaker (18) both made good starts while they were at the crease together, but remaining hopes of victory were dashed when they were dismissed in the 35th and 36th overs. Sports did, however, bat out their remaining overs and pass the 200 mark, finishing 206 for nine after 45 overs
The new-found batting resilience pleased captain Joel Whittaker, who said, “The last few weeks we’ve been really low on confidence, so it was promising that we fought on right to the end. I hope that we can build on this in the next few games and, hopefully, things will start going our way.”
For Aythorpe, Jack Stevens was their most effective bowler, claiming 4 wickets from 8 overs and conceding just 30. Milbank and Culleton chipped in with two wickets apiece.
It was earlier in the day that the damage was dealt to Sports though. Aythorpe won a favourable toss and sent Burnham into the field on the hottest day of the summer so far. In what was perfect batting conditions, Burnham’s bowlers struggled to get any purchase from the pitch, which let Aythorpe openers Paul Gravatt (45) and Richard Eaton (40) settle in.
It was the innings of Andy Clark though, that pushed Aythorpe into an unassailable position. He hit 4 sixes on his way to 96 not out. Milbank also scored a half-century to seal the deal for the visitors, as they ended 282 for four after 45 overs.
Spin bowler Paul Green performed for Sports on a difficult day – he claimed two wickets, whilst Whittaker brothers Joel and Robin claimed one each.
Next week, the first team travel to Springfield.
Burnham Sports 2nd XI suffered another defeat at the hands of Billericay based St. Andrews in Division 7. The home side won the toss and elected to bat first, sending Sports into the field on a very hot, dry day.
Despite this, Sports got off to a good start as Roger Perrin claimed an early wicket and Sports ran out Thompson. However, a half-century from A. Street, as well as runs from Girkin (38), Yoman (35) and G. Street (39 not out) ensured St. Andrews finished on 229 for 8 after 45 overs.
Veteran Greg Campion impressed for Sports, claiming 3 wickets, whilst Dennis Silvester, Roger Perrin and Chris Rich claimed a wicket each.
In reply, despite good contributions from Grant Smith (18), Chris Rich (14) and Greg Bayliss (32), Sports didn’t threaten chasing the home side as they lost wickets cheaply. In the end, they were bowled out for 80 in the 31st over.
Next week, Sports host Hatfield Peverel at Millfields.
