Hornchurch Athletic 1st v Burnham Sports CC 1st XI on Sat 27 May 2017 at 13:00
Burnham Sports CC Lost by 8 wickets

Match report A catastrophic collapse from Burnham Sports’ batsmen saw the 1st XI suffer a demoralising 8-wicket defeat away to Hornchurch in T-Rippon Division 1 on Saturday.
Sports crumbled in the face of consistent bowling on an uneven, bowler friendly pitch; at one stage, the visitors were reduced to 40-6 after electing to bat first on a hot, sunny day in East London.
Hornchurch bowlers Phillips (3 wickets for 19 runs), Coote (3 wickets for 23), and Wade (4 for 21) dealt the damage to Sports, bowling on a good line and length throughout their spells.
Burnham all-rounder Jamie Hamilton offered some hope of a come back when he came to the crease at number seven, showing a great deal of composure to rack up 43 before being bowled by Coote. However, no one was able to get in and form a solid partnership with Hamilton. Out of the other Sports batsmen, only Paul Green (15) managed to reach double figures. Sports were eventually bowled out for 129 in the 43rd over.
“Although the pitch wasn’t exactly great, we batted poorly today,” commented captain Joel Whittaker after the game. “Some of the dismissals today were unlucky but others were a case of poor shot selection or errors of judgement. Credit to Jamie for giving us something to at least defend, but we need to bat better from top to bottom.”
Chasing a slender total of 129 proved to be relatively light work for Hornchurch in reply. A wicket in just the second ball of the innings for Robin Whittaker raised some alarm bells, but Raftery (63) and Samarasekera (52 not out) saw Hornchurch over the line in the 25th over.
“We simply couldn’t get going today,” said Whittaker. “We need to forget this, move on to the next one and make sure we work harder next game.”
Next Saturday, Sports host early season strugglers Writtle, who have lost 3 and only won 1 of the opening four fixtures.
In a thrilling contest that went right down to the wire, Burnham Sports 2nd XI fell agonisingly short of pulling off an incredible victory against Old Southendians in T-Rippon Division 7 at Millfields.
Chasing a giant first innings total of 245 set by Old Southendians, Sports, inspired by a century from Grant Smith, were just 5 runs short from winning one of the most thrilling games so far this season.
Smith hit the boundary 14 times on his way to 122 and, along with the efforts of Greg Campion (19), David May (18) and Ed King (12), Sports managed to drag themselves into contention with the game entering the final stages. However, after Smith was dismissed, the home side lost their momentum and were unable to reach the finish line. They were eventually bowled out in the final over for 240.
Earlier, Old Southendians opening batsman Catchpole scored 156 to set up the visitors for the afternoon. He formed a solid partnership with Wilks (41) to put Southendians firmly in control of the game. Veteran Sports bowler Greg Campion, who claimed three wickets on the day, eventually dismissed both.
Young prospect Joe Green impressed again with the ball, as he claimed two wickets even though he had an arm injury, that was discovered later to be a broken elbow. David May and Grant Smith, Sports’ man of the match, also claimed two wickets each.
Next Saturday, Sports travel to Woodham Mortimer looking for their second win of the season.
