Burnham Sports CC 1st XI v Great Totham 1st on Sat 03 Sep 2016 at 13:00
Match was Abandoned due to rain. Burnham 225-7, Totham 191-8.
Match report
Rain stopped play for both Burnham Sports 1st and 2nd teams on Saturday in the final round of fixtures in T-Rippon Division One and Division Eight respectively.
The first XI, playing at home to Great Totham, were unfortunate to see the game succumb to the weather, having been in a commanding position over the visitors.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, Sports once again made an excellent start to their innings thanks to Jack Silvester (34) and Joel Whittaker (61) who shared a composed 94-run opening partnership.
However, once Silvester was dismissed a flurry of Burnham wickets fell, reducing the home side to 110-4 at one stage.
Tom Silvester (16) and Robin Whittaker (34) consolidated the innings to see off the dangerous Cheeseman (10-0-39-3) and Mays (10-1-25-2), which allowed David Bridge and Alistair Allchin to let loose in the final overs.
Bridge hit several excellent cover drives on his way to 40 not out and Allchin, despite playing with an injured ankle, got in on the act and smashed 22 off only ten balls.
A single from Allchin off the final ball of the innings brought Burnham to a total of 225-6 after 45 overs; in doing so, they had gained five of the six batting bonus points required to guarantee their place in Division One for next year.
In reply Totham started quickly, racking up 51 runs in the first 8 overs. It was down to Brian Leech, who has bowled superbly all season without reward, to get Burnham underway in their search for victory with a swinging yorker to bowl Totham opener Mays.
Burnham employed their spinners shortly after and Bridge (10-2-38-3), Sports’ most effective bowler on the day, Jamie Hamilton and Tom Silvester all chipped in with wickets to edge closer to victory.
Silvester also took two catches in the deep and affected a run out, whilst Hamilton and Bridge both claimed a catch to leave Totham in trouble on 191 for 8 in the 39th over.
However, the forecasted rain took a hold of the game, and with 6 overs remaining, the game was abandoned and the points were shared.
The result means that Sports sit sixth in the final standings in Division One. Canvey Island CC and Brookweald CC finished 1st and 2nd respectively, and both gain promotion to the Premier Division.
