Burnham Sports CC Lost by 6 wickets
Match report
Report from paper:
Grant Smith made his second century of the season to guide Burnham Sports Second XI to victory against Orsett and Thurrock at home on Saturday in T-Rippon Division 8.
Chasing the away sides total of 205 by the team from Thurrock was not beyond Sports given the recent form of their batsmen; Smith once again leading the batting display with a fine century. He was eventually dismissed for an impressive 112, caught off the bowling of West (5.5-0-1-38).
Smith shared strong partnerships with Captain Jack Shipton (38), Ed King and Roger Perrin, who both made 17, to see Burnham past Thurrock’s total in the 43rd over.
Earlier, Greg Campion made a successful return from an ankle injury to bowl three overs and claim three wickets for Burnham, including the dangerous Shina, whom he clean bowled after scoring 81 and Simpson, who made 57 for the visitors. Mike Jenkins, Joe Green and Shipton picked up a wicket each to limit the home side to 205-6 off 45 overs.
The seconds play their final game of the season away at Goresbrook next weekend, hoping to end a good season on a high note.
Meanwhile, Burnham Sports 1st XI succumbed to another close defeat away to Aythorpe Roding in T-Rippon Division One, after a century from Liam Rosewell propelled the home side to victory.
Having won the toss and electing to bat first, Burnham made a positive start against Aythorpe Roding thanks to a quick-fire 25 from Paul Green. Along with opening partner Jack Silvester the pair put on 65 for the first wicket.
Once Green was dismissed, Jack’s brother Tom came to the crease; together the siblings shared an impressive partnership of 91 before Tom was caught just short of his half century on 48.
Jack shared another good partnership with Jamie Hamilton (57) before being bowled on 90, his highest score for Burnham and tantalisingly close to a maiden century. The fast outfield and flat wicket made for rapid scoring and offered little reward for the Aythorpe bowlers as Burnham finished their innings with a competitive 292-6 off 45 overs.
Burnham’s bowlers got the perfect start in defence of their total when Robin Whittaker swung one back past the bat of S. Gravatt to bowl him for just three. This brought Liam Rosewell to the crease for Aythorpe and, despite a shaky start, he soon took the attack to Burnham. He went on to make 112 not out to see Aythorpe over the line despite big efforts from several Burnham bowlers.
R. Eaton and G. Millbank both contributed to the chase with 45 and 52 respectively as Aythorpe ran out winners in the 43rd over, beating Burnham by six wickets. Whittaker got another wicket to finish with 10-0-64-2 and Fuad Ahmed and Jack Silvester both claimed one wicket each.
After the game captain Joel Whittaker said, “I can’t fault the effort today, our batsmen performed and we set an imposing total. Unfortunately, the pitch remained perfect for batting all day long so our bowlers couldn’t find enough out of it to take any more wickets.”
The result leaves Sports in mid-table with one game remaining this season, against Great Totham, at home next Saturday. They can mathematically be relegated next week if they lose and teams below them score unlikely victories; so Sports will be looking to ensure that doesn’t happen and round off a difficult season with a win.
