Burnham Sports CC Lost by 129 runs
Match report
It was a day of mixed fortunes for Burnham Sports on Saturday. The second team won emphatically at home to Old Southendians whilst the first XI toiled away in the bright sunshine at Ingatestone.
The second XI, who fielded a strong side, batted first on a good pitch at Burnham. Opener Grant Smith was in serene form and started to score quickly with a flurry of boundaries. He went on to make a superb 106, including two sixes and 14 fours, before being bowled by Z. Stock.
Smith was not alone in his exploits as Ed King (54) and captain Jack Shipton (48 not out) also plundered runs to lead Burnham to a massive first innings total of 266 for four wickets.
Burnham then made immediate inroads to the Old Southendians top order thanks to a double wicket maiden from Roger Perrin in only the third over of the second innings. He could not dislodge R. Scott (74 not out) or D. Thompson (63) who showed resolve in an attempt to re-build the innings.
It was Andy Stephens, however, who secured a Burnham victory with an excellent five wicket haul. He ended with figures of 9-3-12-5, which restricted the visitors to 166 for seven wickets from their 45 overs, giving Burnham a 100 run win.
Next week the second XI will be targeting their third win in a row as they travel to struggling Willow Herbs.
Meanwhile, the first team were consigned to their fourth defeat of the season after a dismal batting performance. Batting second, chasing 231 set by Ingatestone, they could only manage 102 in response. Captain Joel Whittaker scored 43 of those runs and Jack Silvester 18, but neither them nor their teammates could prevent one of the worst batting collapses in recent memory. After the game Whittaker said, “It was very disappointing to be bowled out for such a low score, especially on a pitch that looked good to bat on.”
Earlier, having lost the toss and been asked to bowl, Burnham’s bowling attack was faced with a virtually lifeless pitch with little seam movement or turn for the spinners. The economical Brian Leech (6-2-13-0) added pressure as Elliot (23) and Brailey (33) got Ingatestone off to a steady start. In order to keep applying pressure Burnham were forced into regular bowling changes and wickets were subsequently shared around. Joel Whittaker, Tom Silvester, Paul Green and Jamie Hamilton got two wickets each. G. Jeater top scored for Ingatestone with 51 and G. Smith hit 34 off 20 balls to accelerate the innings.
Amazingly, Burnham managed to continue the feat of claiming all 10 wickets in every game they have played this season thanks to a final wicket off the last ball of the innings. However, their batting left much to be desired and they lost by 129 runs.
Sports are still second in the league, but only by six points. Next week they host top-of-the-table Canvey Island at Millfields.
