Canvey Island 1st v Burnham Sports CC 1st XI on Sat 21 May 2016 at 13:00
Burnham Sports CC Lost by 114 runs

Match report Four wickets from Paul Green was not enough as Sports slumped to the second defeat of their 2016 T-Rippon Division One campaign, losing by 144 runs to early pace setters Canvey Island CC.
Green, who began his bowling spell with Canvey sitting reasonably comfortably on 148 for 3 after 34 overs, struck with his second ball to raise hopes of a fight back. Ably assisted by fellow spinner Tom Silvester (3 for 49 after 8 overs), Green then took a further three wickets, two of which came in the final over, to help bowl Canvey out for a competitive total of 211.
Earlier, Andy Stephens got the ball rolling for Sports with two wickets in quick succession. However, missed chances gave Canvey opener Laurence Shearcroft a chance to stabilise the innings. He went on to score 55, before being caught off the bowling of David Bridge. The damage had already been done, however, and along with 56 from Canvey captain Ross Casson, the home side were able to pass the 200-mark.
In reply, Burnham got off to a bad start, losing both opening batsmen to Canvey bowler Jamie Casson within the first 10 overs. From that point, the innings never really gathered any momentum. Captain Joel Whittaker showed some resilience in difficult conditions as he top scored with 34 before being run out. Jamie Hamilton was the only other Burnham batsman who was able to reach double figures (12), which highlighted how badly Sports slumped. Canvey bowler Casum Tiffin caused most of the damage, as he also claimed 4 wickets, conceding just 28 runs after 9 overs.
After the game, Whittaker commented, “Last week was almost the perfect game for us, winning by 10 wickets, but we know that not every game will be like that. We came up against a good side today in Canvey, they’re the in-form team at the moment, so we knew it would always be difficult.”
“I thought we did really well to bowl them out for 211, but it’s really disappointing the way our batting collapsed like that, we need to try and hold it together when wickets go down or else the whole innings can spiral out of control as it did today.”
Next week, Sports host Springfield at Millfields.
