East Hann & Grt B 2nd v Burnham Sports CC 2nd XI on Sat 28 May 2016 at 1pm
Burnham Sports CC Won By 105 Runs
Match report
Another dominating performance from Burnham Sports saw them comfortably beat East Hanningfield & Great Burstead 2 XI by 105 runs.
On a cloudy afternoon, the Hanningfield skipper put sports into bat on what seemed a very dry wicket with softness underneath. The decision to do so seemed to pay off in the first over when a fairly short ball stuck in the pitch, causing Steve Sims to give a simple catch back to the bowler Brown and leave Sports 2-1. This brought Ed King to the crease, who was due some early season runs.
King and Jenkins put on 82 in their 15 overs together, with most of the runs being dealt in boundaries. Jenkins eventually fell to Smith for 41, getting a slight edge on a cut shot which was taken by the keeper. Skipper Jack Shipton was then brought to the crease, looking to build on the half century that he had made two weeks prior.
Both King and Shipton gave chances to Hanningfield, but they were not taken as the pair built a partnership that eventually reached 173 and took sports to 258. Shipton reached 93 but realised that he only needed 7 more for his maiden ton and tried to force the bowling to the boundary. Unfortunately he managed to pick out the long on fielder and fall short of his maiden century with 4 balls left in the innings.
As the batsmen crossed, this left King on strike needing 5 runs for his century. He was only able to pad and block 2 of the balls, which left him needed 5 off 2. A lovely timed sweep shot took the ball the the boundary, and a single from the last ball of the innings took king to an unbeaten ton.
Hanningfield were only able to manage 158-9, even with Sports only fielding 10 men due to a late drop out, meaning that Sports were one wicket short of a full points victory.
The wickets were shared between Perrin (10-1-34-3), Campion (10-1-19-3) and Steve Sims (8-2-16-3). A mention should also go to Joe Green, who bowled extremely well with some good variations and some well dug out yorkers.
