HAVE A GO AT PLAYING CRICKET IN BURNHAM
If England’s Ashes triumph has inspired you, or you have ever fancied a go at playing cricket, then there is an opportunity on Sunday.
Burnham Sports will, weather permitting, hold an open day at their base in Millfields, between 10am and 5pm. There will be an opportunity to have a bat or a bowl for free, plus some basic training, with all equipment provided.
Sports have Kwik cricket equipment, where a hard ball is not used, and would welcome any potential players aged 12 or upwards to attend - be it for ten minutes or a few hours.
“Our league season finishes on Saturday and the idea of Sunday is to have a bit of fun,” Neil Saunders, the club secretary said....Sue Silvester, the club treasurer, who has organised the event, said.
“We will be about at the ground through the morning and afternoon playing games - all those interested in joining us need are a pair of trainers. We will provided everything else.”
Those after more information can contact Neil on 01621 784182.
This Saturday, Sports close their respective league campaigns. The 1st XI, relegated from the T.Rippon Mid-Essex Premier League, travel to Old Chelmsfordians, while the 2nd XI, who have had a successful time in division nine, finish with a home game against Southend Monarchs. Both fixtures will start at 1pm.
Last weekend, the 1st XI again threatened to chalk up a victory but were left to lament a 17-run defeat at home to High Roding.
Chasing 260 to win, Sports were on course while the fourth-wicket pair of Ali Allchin (66) and Jalal Ahmed (23) were together, after Paul Green, having made 175 for the 2s the previous week, had fallen for 35.
However, Allchin was run out after a mix-up and then Ahmed followed soon after.
Fuad Ahmed (55) tried hard once they had departed but it was not quite enough in another game that was exciting for neutrals.
Earlier, Holdgate (81) and Burns (67) had helped High Roding accumulate a teasing tally. Sports dropped a string of catches, which proved costly, with Robin Whittaker and Fuad Ahmed each bagging a couple of wickets.
Meanwhile, the 2nd XI stared defeat in the face before beating Broomfield by four wickets.
Broomfield began slowly after choosing to bat, restricted by their own cautious tactics and the nagging accuracy of Roger Perrin and David May.
Kugan, a highly promising 16-year-old, batted with much more intent and made 93, as the home team eventually finished their 40 overs on 173 for six. Sayeid Ahmed took half of those wickets at a personal cost of 48.
Sports stumbled to 79 for six in reply, only for Sayeid (56 not out) and Andy Stephens (47 not out) to guide them home with more than six overs to spare without further loss.
