Little Baddow v Burnham Sports CC 1st XI on Sat 01 Aug 2015 at 1pm
Burnham Sports CC Lost BY 67 RUNS
Match report
A fine century from Dipin Sodhi condemned Burnham Sports to a demoralising 67-run defeat when they travelled to Little Baddow in Saturday’s T-Rippon Premier Division fixture. Baddow’s opening batsman smashed his way to 134, which lead Baddow to build a total of 345 for Burnham to chase. Despite a valiant effort this proved to be too much for Sports, who were bowled out in the 43rd over for 278.
Bowling first, Sports had made inroads to the Baddow top order early on thanks to two wickets from Joel Whittaker and one from his brother Robin. Crucially though, they were unable to dismiss Sodhi. Joel was then denied a vital third wicket when Andy Harris came to the crease; in a controversial caught-behind decision, the umpire adjudged him not out. Harris and Sodhi capitalised on this as they went on to build a third wicket partnership of 149 that gave Little Baddow the chance to attack Burnham’s bowling in the latter stages.
Sodhi was eventually run out in the 42nd over thanks to a brilliant throw from the boundary by Jack Silvester, but the platform he had laid allowed Patel (37) and Vasu to come in and score freely in the final overs. Vasu hit a brutal 31 off just 11 balls, hammering four sixes as he brought Baddow’s total beyond 300 runs.
In reply, Burnham managed to stay in touch with the required run rate for the early part of their innings but lost vital wickets in pursuit of the Baddow total. Sports opener Jack Silvester managed 58 at the top of the order, but watched on as Burnham were reduced to 154-5 after 28 overs. Stuart Robinson bowled with control to claim three wickets for 36 runs off a 10 over spell. He was backed up by Leo Willan, who finished with 2 wickets for 20.
Burnham’s lower order batsmen played aggressively to try and keep Sports in touch of the required run rate but to no avail. Jalal Ahmed, playing his first game for Burnham in three years, looked remarkably fluent as he scored 48. Skipper Jamie Hamilton added 31 off 19 balls and tail-ender Tom Silvester finished on 21 not out before Sports slipped to defeat.
After the game, Captain Hamilton commented; “I think I’m sounding like a broken record now, but again this was a fixture we targeted and again we’ve dropped short. I believe this game, of all, has highlighted our inconsistencies this season. One week, our bowling and fielding will be outstanding, but the batting will have let us down. Other games, like today, it has been the other way round.” With just four fixtures remaining this season, Sports now have to hope fixtures elsewhere go in their favour and win all their games to avoid the drop; this seems unlikely to happen though, as a difficult end to the season awaits them. Next Saturday, Sports host table-toppers Bentley at Millfields.
