Burnham Sports CC 1st XI v Little Baddow on Sat 30 May 2015 at 1pm
Burnham Sports CC Lost by 96 runs
Match report
Sorry Burnham Sports face an uphill battle to avoid relegation after suffering a fifth successive defeat in the T.Rippon Mid-Essex League Premier Division.
Sports suffered familiar frailties as they slumped to a 96-run defeat at home to Little Baddow. They dropped vital catches, bowled too many four-balls and batted indifferently.
The loss leaves Sports bottom of the table and, to make matters worse, three of their next four fixtures are against clubs who occupied the top three last year. This Saturday, they travel to Bentley (start 1pm), one of the title favourites.
“We always knew this year was going to be tough after winning promotion last summer but it’s disappointing that we’ve not been playing to our full potential,” Jamie Hamilton, captain of Sports, said.
“We got punished for more fielding errors and we’ve yet to click as a batting unit. It did not help that we were also missing some key players but, on the plus side, they will be back at the weekend.”
Robin Whittaker, Burnham’s best bowler in recent seasons, was among those missing for the fixture against Little Baddow and, in his absence, the visiting team made 250 for seven from their allotted 45 overs.
Hamilton juggled seven bowlers but none managed more than a wicket. Baddow had only 80 after 20 overs but thumped 170 from the remaining 25.
Andy Harris (74) and Dave Lucy (58) put on 93 for the third wicket to give their side the initiative. Burnham dropped the former a number of times and he was also “dismissed” off a no-ball bowled by Fuad Ahmed.
Lucy, a popular captain for many years at Burnham, was in a hurry against his former team-mates and hit eight fours and two sixes during his 40-ball innings.
Sports began fluently in reply, with Ali Allchin and Paul Green putting on 38 without any alarms.
However, Allchin (18) was then undone by the accurate Julian (10-1-25-2) and his exit led to wickets falling at regular intervals.
Green (27), Jack Silvester (23) and David Bridge (35 not out) offered some resistance but, for the fourth match in succession, no Sports player managed to reach 50.
Burnham’s 2nd XI provided some cheer by pulling off a superb five-wicket win away to Hornchurch Athletic 3rd XI in their division nine encounter.
Set 239 to win in the 40 overs per side contest, Burnham looked in trouble at 155 for five with 13 overs left, but Ed King (57 not out) and David May (49 not out) saw them home without further loss.
The pair hit 17 fours and a six between them, guiding their side home with 11 balls to spare. Jack Shipton (33) and Steve Rees-Evans (29) had earlier played their part.
Kershaw’s knock of 121 had put Hornchurch in the driving seat, with evergreen George Rice (two for 32) being the most successful of the Burnham bowlers.
This Saturday, Burnham’s 2nd XI host Old Chelmsfordians 3rd XI and will climb into the top five if victorious.
