Burnham Sports CC 1st XI v Thurrock on Sat 16 May 2015 at 1pm
Burnham Sports CC Lost by 79 runs

Match report
Burnham Sports have been hit with another setback, with hard-hitting batsman Rob Layzell ruled out for up to two months with a broken finger.
Layzell, renowned for his attacking style, suffered the injury in a pre-season friendly but only had it checked at hospital last week. X-rays revealed a nasty fracture that will require corrective surgery this week.
“I’ve been told that I could be out for up to eight weeks,” Layzell said. “I did it dropping a catch and it’s hugely frustrating.”
Layzell’s absence follows Grant Smith, another batsman, leaving the club to play closer to his home in South Woodham.
Scoring runs has been an issue for Sports, who lost their third T.Rippon Mid-Essex League Premier Division in succession when losing by 79 runs at home to Thurrock last Saturday.
Chasing 243 to win in the 45 overs per side contest, they collapsed to 49 for six, and then 78 for eight, before rallying and ending up with a more respectable 163. The previous week they had been dismissed for 68 by Goresbrook.
“We got blown away by the quickest bowler in the league in the match against Goresbrook but I was disappointed with the way we capitulated against Thurrock,” Jamie Hamilton, the Sports captain, said. “The pitch was placid and we really should have done a lot better.
“There were some positives, because we began and ended the game well - but what went on in the middle section just was not good enough.”
Sports had Thurrock on the ropes in the first hour, reducing them to 40 for four after the first 16 overs bowled in tandem by Robin Whittaker and Andy Stephens.
However, the visiting team dug in against the change bowlers, with lanky left-hander Matt Hills turning things around with a forceful 99.
He perished in the final over of his team’s innings, skying a return catch to Fuad Ahmed, who finished with figures of 9-0-53-2. Stephens ended with three for 55, with Whittaker (10-2-24-1) again the most economical.
Burnham lost two wickets in the second over of their reply before Sayeid Ahmed (28) and Hamilton (17) took them to 38 without any further loss. The latter’s departure triggered a spell where four more wickets tumbled for only 11 runs.
The match was over as a contest by the time ninth-wicket pair Paul Green and Stephens came together, but the pair put on 70 and occupied 16 overs. The latter eventually holed out to long on, for 33, with Green last man out for 48, with two balls left.
