Burnham Sports CC Won by one wicket
Match report
Jubilant Burnham Sports will be playing in the T.Rippon Mid-Essex League Premier Division next season after sealing promotion with a remarkable one-wicket win away to Ingatestone.
Teenager Jack Silvester was the hero, thumping two sixes and six fours in an unbeaten 60 as Sports, chasing a target of 254 from 50 overs, squeezed home with two balls to spare after being on the ropes virtually all afternoon.
The 18-year-old, the youngest player in Burnham’s side, came of age and clinched victory in tandem with Andy Stephens, who, at 46, is the oldest.
All looked lost when the last-wicket combination came together requiring 61 from 55 balls but the pair rose to the challenge. They had whittled the target down to 32 with five overs left, then 19 with three remaining.
They still still required seven from the final over, bowled by Jeater, who, earlier in the day had smashed a rapid century to put Ingatestone in the driving seat.
Silvester managed a single from the first ball before Stephens hit three successive twos through the offside to clinch a success that, for much of the day, had looked most unlikely.
Burnham’s joy was doubled later in the evening when it was confirmed that Rayleigh, the only club capable of overhauling them in their promotion battle, had lost to Bentley.
It means that Sports will be playing in the top division for the first time since 2004 - and for only the second time in their history.
“I know everyone watching in the clubhouse was nervous but, out in the middle, it was great fun,” said Silvester, who came in at No 8 and attacked at every opportunity. “Andy and I are similarly optimistic and adopted a simple plan of hitting the bad balls and defending the good ones It worked out well.”
Stephens added: “Jack showed maturity beyond his years. He’s one of a number of good young players at the club who deserve a crack at the Premier League. It won’t be easy and we will start off as relegation favourites but Saturday showed that we don’t lack the necessary spirit.”
Burnham had been 135 for seven at one stage, with the Whittaker brothers - Robin (47) and Joel (31) both dismissed after getting their team back into contention with a fifth-wicket stand of 63.
Silvester and Sayeid Ahmed (19) put on 45 for the eighth wicket but, until the dramatic conclusion, that had only looked like adding a degree of respectability.
Ingatestone were stunned by the defeat, having won the toss and smashed their way to 233 for two in the 35th over.
At that stage, the dominant hosts - taking advantage of Burnham’s worst bowling display of the year - looked certain to score well in excess of 300 but they imploded once Jeater (16 fours and three sixes in his 111) and Kendon (49) departed.
Remarkably, they lost eight wickets for 20 runs in 34 balls, with Robin Whittaker (five for 42) and Joel Whittaker (four for 45) being rewarded for merely bowling straight. Just moments earlier, they had raced from 134 to 202 in the space of five overs without losing a wicket.
Most significantly, their unexpected collapse meant that Burnham had five extra overs to accrue their runs.
This Saturday, Sports play at home to Goresbrook (start 1pm) in a match that will effectively settle which of the pair wins the league.
The visiting team trail Sports by eight points but won the reverse fixture convincingly and have been desperately unlucky with wet weather this summer - four of their games being washed out.
“Goresbrook are easily the best team we’ve played and they have lost only once, by one wicket, all season.” Stephens said. “We will have to be at our very best but can now at least play with a degree of freedom.”
Jamie Hamilton, Burnham’s captain, remains sidelined with a calf injury and Grant Smith, the middle-order batsman, is unavailable. On the plus side, Dominic Whittaker, the wicket-keeper, returns.
