Burnham Sports CC 1st XI v Rankins 1's on Sat 09 Aug 2014 at 1.00
Burnham Sports CC Lost by 2 runs
Match report
Burnham Sports could win promotion to the T.Rippon Premier League on Saturday but look like being without Jamie Hamilton, their captain, for the rest of the season.
Hamilton tore a calf muscle while playing in a tour game, as a guest for another club, at the end of last week. The all-rounder, who had scored a brilliant unbeaten century for Sports just days earlier, is on crutches and facing a battle to play again before the end of the summer.
“I hit a ball through mid-wicket and then felt a searing pain after setting off to run,” Hamilton said. “I’m struggling to walk at the moment but am still hoping to play in our final game [on August 30] but that is probably being optimistic.”
Hamilton was a frustrated spectator at Millfields last week as his team lost a compelling match at home to Rankins by two runs after being set 223 to win.
Despite that agonising defeat, Sports moved a step closer to going up because Rettendon, who began the day third in the table, suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Rayleigh, who have now jumped above them.
Burnham require 36 points from their final three games to guarantee promotion, with 78 available. If they win away to Ingatestone on Saturday, and Rayleigh lose at home to Bentley 2nd, then they will return to the top league after an absence of ten years.
“It’s ours to give away now but we’ve got to finish the job off,” Hamilton said. “After Ingatestone, we finish off with games against Goresbrook, who are the best team in the league, and then Rayleigh, who are still chasing us, so nobody should be complacent.”
Sports would be all but over the line had they not lost a tense clash against Rankins.
The last pair of Robin Whittaker and Dominic Whittaker, his older brother, were inching their side to victory when the latter was adjudged LBW, with 25 balls still remaining.
Robin was left unbeaten on 39, after Joel Whittaker (44) and Fuad Ahmed (41) had both batted with fluency.
Earlier, Rankins had cashed in on some indifferent bowling to end with 222 for nine from their allotted 45 overs.
Bolton (33) and Lees (29) got the visiting team off to a lively start, with Rafferty (45 not out) belying the fact that he was batting at No 9.
The prolific Robin Whittaker finished with four for 55 but, by his own admission, was not at his ruthless best.
Meanwhile, Burnham’s 2nd XI were gaining a convincing 72-run win away to Old Chelmsfordians 3rd XI in division nine.
Ed King (53) and Rob Layzell (52) laid the foundations for Burnham scoring 213 for eight, with Neil Wade and Brian Leech also making handy contributions. King and Leech shared in a fruitful sixth-wicket stand of 78 that deflated the home team.
The Old Boys were then pinned down early on, opening the door for spinner Greg Campion to snare four victims. He was aided by Leroy Sande, who is only 13, taking another superb catch in the deep at mid-on.
This Saturday, the 2nd XI are at home to East Hanningfield & Great Burstead 2nd (start 1pm).
