Hatfield Peverel v Burnham Sports CC 1st XI on Sat 20 Apr 2013 at 1pm
Burnham Sports CC Lost by 61 runs

Match report Burnham Sports cricket club will complete their pre-season preparations with a friendly away to Little Waltham on Saturday.
Burnham have been holding fortnightly indoor net sessions at Writtle throughout the winter and blew away some more cobwebs with a low-key game at Hatfield Peverel last weekend.
Sports lost their opening fixture by 67 runs but, with the league season looming, the result was insignificant. The visiting team treated it more as an exercise in trying and get everyone a bat and succeeded: nine of their players turned their arms over and everyone took guard at the crease.
Even so, for a time it seemed they might embarrass their rivals, who fielded a much stronger starting XI and play in a division above them. On a damp, tricky pitch, Hatfield slumped to 24 for four before recovering, helped by Burnham’s desire to get everyone involved in the action.
The home side eventually mustered 191 for six from their allotted 45 overs. In reply, Sports were 77 for two at one stage, with Joel Whittaker (38) and Rob Layzell (26) progressing smoothly, but stumbled to 124 all out once that pair had departed.
Adriaan Hugo, a new recruit from South Africa, made a highly encouraging debut for the club. The 6ft 4in seam bowler, playing his first competitive match for six years, was understandably rusty but showed bags of promise – taking the first wicket to fall and also contributing a brilliant reflex run-out when the ball was driven back at him.
Burnham hope that the 25-year-old will become a regular fixture in their team and need bowling options as their leading all-rounder, Ali Allchin, studying at university in Cambridge, is unlikely to play for them this summer. Andy Stephens, diagnosed with a frozen shoulder last year, bowled for the first time in 11 months off a couple of paces at Hatfield but had to withdraw from the attack because he was still suffering pain.
Stephens has given up the role of 1st XI captain, which he has held for the past two years. Jamie Hamilton, who he succeeded, has once more picked up the reins.
Burnham’s 1st XI begin their T.Rippon Mid-Essex League first division season on Saturday week with a trip to Thurrock, while the 2nd XI entertain xx in division eight. The club’s Warsop Sunday League matches begin later in the season.
Sports are always on the lookout for new players, of any ability. Please contact Neil Saunders, the club secretary on 01621 785718, if you are interested in playing, or logon to the website xxx for more details.
