Writtle v Burnham Sports CC 1st XI on Sat 13 Jul 2013 at 1.30
Burnham Sports CC Lost by 9 wickets
Match report
Burnham Sports will bid to put a woeful performance behind them when they play at home to Ingatestone on Saturday.
Sports suffered a nine-wicket trouncing at the hands of Writtle last weekend and, as a consequence, remain just one place off the bottom of the T.Rippon Mid-Essex League first division.
The table is congested but another defeat on Saturday would leave Sports facing an uphill battle to survive in the final third of the campaign.
Burnham were badly out of sorts at Writtle, albeit they were depleted by a number of their regular faces being unavailable.
Stand-in captain Paul Green won the toss and, predictably, did not hesitate to bat given the hot conditions and hard nature of the wicket.
His team struggled for momentum against an accurate attack, though, and were 74 for three at the halfway stage of their innings.
From that base, though, they imploded - losing five wickets for just four runs during an awful eight-over period. Dominic Whittaker, who was dropped before he had got off the mark, was among those to depart during this spell, having made a battling 38.
Had it not been for Tom Silvester (17 not out) and Robin Whittaker (13) putting on 32 for the ninth wicket, they would not have reached their final inadequate tally of 110. The speedy Cook (four for 22) and spinner Kalim (four for 35) did most of the damage.
To cap a miserable day, Sports then put up a lacklustre effort in the field - Writtle’s opening batsmen taking advantage and thumping 41 off the first six overs.
Hughes (43) and Morgan (54 not out) threatened to finish things off on their own before the former chipped a catch to Robin Whittaker at mid-wicket off the bowling of David Bridge.
Burnham’s 2nd XI also endured a bad day, losing by 77 runs at home to Terling in their division eight fixture.
Terling batted first and accumulated 191 but they were squandered more than 12 overs, which Sports inherited.
Despite having bags of time to reach their target, though, Sports could muster only 114.
This Saturday, the 2nd XI have a tough game away at Great Wakering.
