South Weald v Burnham Sports CC 1st XI on Sat 22 Jun 2013 at 1.30
Burnham Sports CC Lost by 174 runs
Match report
Burnham Sports will need to recapture their best form and show some character on Saturday when they entertain Thurrock at Millfields (start 1.30pm).
Sports were no match for the Grays-based team in the reverse fixture at the start of the season and go into this weekend’s game on the back off a humiliating 174-run loss away to South Weald.
Jamie Hamilton, the 1st XI captain, was unhappy with his team’s latest performance, which featured some wayward bowling, clumsy fielding and a tame batting collapse
“It was a really lacklustre effort and I just hope the team respond positively to some of my criticism,” he said. “Thurrock looked a seriously good team at the start of the season - I’d say they are promotion favourites - and we’ll have to be right back on our A-game to be competitive against them.”
South Weald dominated from the outset after being put in, with opening batsmen Thacker (104) and Skelton (73) putting on 177 inside 29 overs.
They ended up accumulating 287 for seven from their allotted 45 overs in the T.Rippon Mid-Essex League first division fixture, with only Fuad Ahmed (10-3-48-2) and Hamilton (two for 54) emerging with much credit.
A target of more than six per over was always going to be tough for Burnham, but they began well enough with Sayeid Ahmed (25) and Dominic Whittaker (24) putting on 50 in the first ten overs.
However, both then fell in quick succession and their dismissals triggered a weak surrender. Five batsmen failed to trouble the scorer as Sports subsided to 113 all out.
Meanwhile, Burnham’s 2nd XI were recording a third successive division eight win - beating Old Chelmsfordians by nine runs in a tense match played in constant high winds.
After winning the toss and deciding to bat, Sports battled hard to reach a total of 178 for six.
They were indebted to the third-wicket pairing of David May (56) and Neil Saunders (38). The former, who has been in excellent form with bat and ball, was scoring his second successive half-century.
Tim Lornie chipped in with a handy 19, while new recruit Dave Kitching made 16 not out.
The game hung in the balance after tea but Greg Campion (three for 45) had the final say - bowling Foster (55) with 13 balls left. May (12-2-28-2) and Brian Leech (7-0-26-2) also played pivotal roles as the visiting team finished 169 all out.
Campion said: “Our past two games have been played in very tough conditions but we’ve worked really hard and got our reward. It’s great to have won three on the spin after a slow start.”
This Saturday, the 2nds play Stock away.
On Sunday, Sports travelled to Old Chelmsfordians for a Warsop League clash and lost by 37 runs.
OCs managed 229 for eight from their 40 overs, with Matt Mears, Fuad Ahmed and Ali Allchin each taking two wickets.
Burnham looked well set at 74 for one in the fourteenth over of their reply but then slid to 123 for six after 28, and from that stage they were always second favourites. They ended up 192 all out, with Tom Silvester (39), Rob Layzell (35) and Allchin (32) making an impact.
This Sunday, Sports entertain Tillingham.
