Herongate v Burnham Sports CC 1st XI on Sat 01 Jun 2013 at 1.30
Burnham Sports CC Won by 18 runs
Match report
Bubbling Burnham Sports will bid to win their fourth match in a row for the first time in three years when they entertain Little Waltham on Saturday (start 1.30pm).
Sports completed a hat-trick of victories with a tense 18-run success away to Herongate last weekend, having beaten Ingatestone and Little Baddow in their previous two matches.
The odds look loaded in their favour because Waltham are bottom of the T.Rippon Mid-Essex League first division table, having failed to win a match this campaign. The clubs also met in a friendly in April, when Sports won easily by 116 runs.
“We are not getting ahead of ourselves,” Neil Saunders, the club’s secretary said. “Waltham have some dangerous players and we’ve had mixed fortunes against them in the past. You can take nothing for granted in our league and I’m sure it will be a competitive affair.”
Sports were stunned to find that Herongate had only nine players when they arrived for the match at the tiny ground which runs adjacent to Brentwood Road.
Perhaps it lured them into a false sense of security because they crumbled to 149 all out after deciding to bat. Had it not been for Robin Whittaker (35 not out) and Jack Silvester (25) - plus the gift of 29 extras - they would have been in even deeper trouble.
Even so, teams routinely score double that amount at Herongate and Jamie Hamilton’s side, who squandered 14 of their 45 overs, seemed in serious danger of suffering a humiliating loss.
The outstanding Whittaker then grabbed five wickets in the space of just 33 balls, though, to leave the home side reeling on 58 for six, which was effectively 58 for eight.
However, the seventh-wicket pair of Turrel (26) and Stock (44) then breathed new life into the game with an unlikely partnership of 63.
Herongate found themselves needing 28 to win off as many overs with the pair firmly established but Joel Whittaker, older brother of Robin, had the final say - dismissing the pair of them courtesy of catches by Tom Silvester and Sayeid Ahmed.
Meanwhile, Burnham’s 2nd XI were losing by four wickets to Woodham Mortimer at Millfields.
The writing was on the wall for Sports after they managed to accumulate just 104 after being put into bat. Ed King (19) was their top runscorer.
Woodham Mortimer required 40 overs to overhaul them, though, as the luckless David May (12 overs for just 19), Roger Perrin (9-1-14-1) and Greg Campion (11-1-34-2) combined to bowl superbly. Dennis Silvester also contributed a nimble run out.
This Saturday, Sports, who are bottom of the league, make the short trip to their Tilingham counterparts, who have also been struggling this term.
Burnham play St Aidans at home on Sunday (start 2pm). The club are short of Sunday players and would welcome any newcomers. Equipment can be provided. Please phone Neil Saunders on 01621 784182 for more details.
