Burnham Sports CC 1st XI v Writtle on Sat 11 May 2013 at 1.30
Burnham Sports CC Lost by 97 runs
Match report
Burnham Sports will again be forced to send out patched-up teams when they attempt to put a disappointing start to the new season behind them on Saturday.
Jamie Hamilton, Fuad Ahmed, Jalal Ahmed, Rob Layzell, David Bridge, Tom Stephens and Simon Turnnidge are among a lengthy list of players who are unavailable, while Robin Whittaker, the club’s leading bowler last season, faces a struggle to get back from University.
To compound matters, Ali Allchin, the all-rounder, is playing for a club near where he is studying in Cambridge, while Andy Stephens is still limited by a shoulder injury.
“It’s a pretty depressing state of affairs because we seem to have a shrinking pool of players,” Stephens said. “We’ve had to beg, borrow and steal to get two teams out in our opening fixtures and being spread too thin has been reflected by our results.”
The 1st XI, who travel to Ingatestone on Saturday, were thrashed by Thurrock in their opening fixture and followed that with a 97-run defeat at the hands of Writtle last weekend.
Sports begun well enough, with David May (two for 36) and Adriaan Hugo, making his league debut, being menacing, but Sivajoti (67) helped the visiting team accumulate 236 for seven from their allotted 45 overs.
Hamilton, who might have dismissed him earlier had a couple of chances not been spilled, ended with two for 64.
A massive downpour at tea worked against Burnham as a previously innocent pitch offered bowlers more assistance.
Sports quickly lost three wickets before Grant Smith and Hamilton (21) repaired some of the damage with a stand of 45.
Smith (52) continued to resist once the latter had been dismissed but Sayeid Ahmed (21) was the only other batsman to make much impact. Burnham ended up 139 all out, squandering a dozen overs.
