Thurrock v Burnham Sports CC 1st XI on Sat 04 May 2013 at 1.30
Burnham Sports CC Lost by 152 runs

Match report Burnham Sports cricket club will seek to put something of a false start behind them this Saturday.
The 1st XI were thrashed by 152 runs in their opening T.Rippon Mid-Essex League first division fixture by Grays-based Thurrock last weekend, while the 2nd XI lost by 44 runs at home to Stock 3rd in division eight.
Things began well enough for the firsts when Robin Whittaker, their outstanding bowler last summer, picked up from where he left off by taking a wicket with his very first delivery.
However, it was pretty much downhill all the way after that as Thurrock, aided to some extent by a heavy shower that left conditions wet for a crucial period, went on to dominate.
Henry (101 not out) and Ayub (77) put on 136 for the fourth wicket as Thurrock accumulated 250 for four from their allotted 45 overs. Whittaker ended with three for 80 but, with the other wicket to fall being a run out, none of his team-mates could manage a strike between them.
Burnham quickly lost the Whittaker brothers – Robin and Joel – when beginning their reply and only Grant Smith (27) and Paul Green (19) offered much resistance after. Sports crumbled to 98 all out.
“The rain did not help our cause as it made the ball wet and not easy to grip for our bowlers,” Neil Saunders, of Burnham, said. “But take nothing away from Thurrock. They looked a very good side and I’m sure they will be pressing for a place in the Premier League by the end of the year.”
Meanwhile, the 2nd XI were entertaining Stock in a more even contest at Millfields.
Stock initially laboured after electing to bat, but the third-wicket pair of Boxer (75) and Lewis (51) threatened to take them well past 200.
Once they had perished, though, Burnham hit back and restricted the visiting team to 190 for eight. Greg Campion and David May shared six wickets after Brian Leech (two for 24) and Roger Perrin, who conceded just 17 runs from his 12 overs, had applied the handbrake early on.
In reply, Sports got off to a solid start but struggled to keep up with the required run rate. Steve Sims (44), Andy Stephens (21) and Neil Wade (20) ended up being the only trio to manage double figures as, disappointingly, the home side finished on 146 for eight.
This Saturday, the firsts entertain Writtle (start 1.30pm), while the seconds travel to their Terling counterparts.
