Southweald v Burnham Sports CC 1st XI on Sat 18 Aug 2012 at 1.30pm
Burnham Sports CC Lost by 103 runs
Match report
An entertaining sixth-wicket stand of 127 by Joel Whittaker and Jack Silvester could not prevent depleted Burnham Sports suffering a heavy defeat away to South Weald.
The pair came together with their team a sorry 37 for five in the T.Rippon Mid-Essex League first division fixture, chasing 281 for victory.
It would have been easy for the pair to throw in the towel, especially with fast bowler Pummell, who had taken all the wickets, continuing to bowl with menace and pace.
However, they gave the home team some of their own medicine, Whittaker making 70 and Silvester 45 before falling to successive deliveries.
Whittaker hit a six and ten fours, his younger colleague finding the boundary six times.
Earlier, Sports had worked hard to limit South Weald to 98 for two after 22 overs.
However, the visiting team then wilted, with the home side thumping 182 in the second half of their innings. Chambers, their captain, the opening bat, held his team's innings together with an undefeated 112, albeit he was given a couple of lives along the way.
This Saturday, Sports, who have faded after a bright start to the campaign, travel to Bentley 2nd, who have already been relegated.
Meanwhile, Burnham's 2nd XI were gaining a citical 70-run win over fellow division eight strugglers Broomfield at Millfields.
On the hottest day of the year, Sports won the toss and had no hesitation in batting first on a flat wicket.
Opener Grant Smith took advantage of the conditions and carried his bat, making an unbeaten 120. Smith was ably assisted by Ed King (37) and David May (38 not out) Burnham finished on 276 for 4 off their 45 overs.
In reply Broomfield made a good effort but were always behind the run rate and finished on 205 for five. Greg Campion claimed three for 48 off 12 overs.
This Saturday, the 2's play at home to Stock III. On Sunday, Burnham play Westcliff at home in their final Warsop League game of the year.
