Rayleigh v Burnham Sports CC 1st XI on Sat 07 Jul 2012 at 1.30pm
Burnham Sports CC Lost by 3 wickets
Match report
Burnham Sports suffered one of the worst batting collapses in their history as they lost by three wickets away to Rayleigh.
Sports surrendered seven wickets for just three runs as they crashed from 87 for three to 90 all out against the unbeaten T Rippon Mid-Essex League first division league leaders.
That remarkable collapse became even more painful later in the day as Rayleigh edged home, having themselves been 69 for six at one stage.
Neil Saunders, standing in as skipper for Sports for the injured Andy Stephens, was left dazed by his depleted team's sudden surrender.
"It was ten minutes of madness and came completely out of blue," he said. "One minute we were 87 for three, with Dominic (Whittaker) and Jalal (Ahmed) both looking very comfortable.
"Then, the pair of them fell in quick succession and everybody else who followed them came and went.
"I was batting at 11 myself and couldn't believe it. One moment I was watching comfortably without a thought of even getting my pads on - five minutes later I was batting.
"The real frustration is that had we managed just 40 or 50 more runs, I'm certain we would have won. We had them in all sorts of trouble but simply didn't have quite enough to defend."
Whittaker (41) and Jalal (30) looked like laying the foundations for a reasonable total but, once they succumbed, Sports completely lost their way. The next five batsmen failed to add a single run between them.
The wickets continued to tumble when Rayleigh began their pursuit of the visiting team's modest tally. Robin Whittaker (four for 29) and Jalal (two for 14) gave their team the sniff of an unlikely victory but it was not enough.
Meanwhile, Burnham's 2nd XI were beating South Woodham Ferrers 3rd XI at Millfields.
Put into bat, Woodham raced to 56 without loss before Sayeid Ahmed (9-0-21-1) bowled Keeble for 33.
That wicket opened the floodgates for Burnham as skipper David May (9-1-12-5) and Greg Campion (9-1-27-4) combined to dismiss them for 112.
Opening batsmen Sayeid (17) and Mike Forshaw (24) kept Sports on top, with Neil Wade (20), Ed King (18 not out) and Steve Sims (13 not out) also getting in on the act.
This Saturday, the 1st XI entertain Little Waltham, while the 2nds play away to Ekco Monarchs. On Sunday, Sports have a match at home to Essex Carriers in the Warsop Sunday League.
