Ingatestone v Burnham Sports CC 1st XI on Sat 26 May 2012 at 1.30pm
Burnham Sports CC Won by two wickets
Match report
Having won the toss and elected to bat, Ingatestone, the early league leaders in T.Rippon Mid-Essex League Division One, moved briskly to 59 without loss in the thirteenth over. That gave them the platform to score well in excess of 200.
However, Stephens (7-2-25-1) and Jamie Hamilton (12-1-36-1) then combined to limit their progress and, by the end of their 45 overs, the home team had to be content with a tally of 194 for eight. Valentine (75) held his team’s innings together before having his stumps disturbed by Joel Whittaker (two for 51). Ali Allchin (three for 61) also picked up late wickets, while young Jack Silvester (one for 20) held his own, too.
Burnham slipped to 42 for three in reply before Allchin and Hamilton grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck. Cashing in on some ordinary bowling, the fourth-wicket pair were not troubled to put on 100 in 15 overs.
The duo looked capable of finishing the job on their own but Hamilton (35) paid for a rash dart down the wicket and he was swiftly followed back in the clubhouse by Rob Layzell, Tom Silvester and Allchin, the last-named run out by a direct throw for 62, having thumped two sixes and six fours.
Having been coasting at 142 for three, Sports were 154 for seven with two new batsmen at the wicket.
Jack Silvester, just 15, was not for budging, though, and had an ideal ally in the experienced Neil Saunders. The pair put on 33 crucial runs before the latter was adjudged leg-before.
Ingatestone sensed a final twist, but Silvester and Stephens guided Sports home soon after without further scares. Fittingly, it was the youngster (19 not out), who had also played an important role in the defeat of Great Waltham the previous week, who punched the winning runs through the off-side, with more than six overs to spare.
