Match report Dominic Whittaker starred as Burnham Sports battled back from the brink to eventually record a convincing 70-run win over Great Waltham at Millfields.

Sports, belatedly playing their first match of the season after a rain-hit start to the campaign, looked in serious trouble after sliding to 137 for nine, having been put into bat in the T.Rippon Mid Essex League Division One encounter.

However, Whittaker played with great composure and awareness to dominate a last-wicket undefeated stand of 51 with Tom Stephens.

The wicket-keeper finished unbeaten on 48, an innings that included five boundaries. Stephens, 17, played his part too in keeping Waltham at bay for more than ten overs, albeit he finished with only five to his name.

Sports finished with 188 for nine from their 45 overs, a respectable tally given the slow pitch and outfield. Moreover, the momentum of the game had swung.

The double act was not finished, either, Stephens having opening batsman Godding caught behind without scoring in the fourth over.

That gave the home side even more encouragement and tight bowling, coupled with a slick fielding display, led to Waltham subsiding from 95 for four, with 17 overs left, to 118 all out.

Jamie Hamilton (12-4-25-2) was the pick of the attack, Andy Stephens, father of Tom, cashing in on the pressure he created with a return of four for 30. Joel Whittaker (two for 39) was also instrumental, while Neil Saunders produced a superb run out from square leg.
