East Hanningfield v Burnham Sports CC 2nd XI on Sat 16 Jul 2011 at 1.30pm
Burnham Sports CC Won by 4 wickets

Match report Simon Turnnidge hit the first fifty of his career as Burnham’s 2nd XI gained a crucial win away to East Hanningfield & Great Burstead in their battle to beat relegation.
Success for the reserves helped ease some of the frustration of the 1st XI’s match at home to Brookweald being abandoned without a ball being bowled, despite the wicket having been covered overnight. Rain proved a pain 24 hours later, too, when the elements had the final say in club’s Sunday League match at home to Maldon.
The chances of the 2nds getting in a game at East Hanningfield’s picturesque ground looked remote when rain, which had been falling since late morning, was still tumbling down an hour after the scheduled start time of 1.30pm.
However, with the pitch protected and the home team industrious in their efforts to remove surface water from the square once it stopped raining, play was able to start almost two hours late without any problems. The outfield also dried rapidly, so much so that the ball did not even become wet.
Time lost meant that the fixture was reduced to 30 overs per side and Neil Saunders, the Burnham captain, did not hesitate to invite East Hanningfield to bat after winning the toss.
The home team responded with a bright start through Hamilton (33) and Faraday (53) but the introduction of Andy Stephens (10-2-32-3) slowed them down.
East Hanningfield finished with 135 from six from their allotted overs. Neil Wade’s athletic display behind the stumps was matched in the outfield, Burnham claiming two run outs via Stephens and May.
Burnham struggled for early momentum when their turn came to bat and were 50 for three midway through their reply. Turnnidge, given a rare chance up the order, was then joined by Stephens, though, and, after a half-hour rain delay, the pair turned things round with a stand of 55 in nine overs.
A feature of their partnership was brisk running before Turnnidge, having nit nine boundaries, nicked one behind. Chris Rich followed the next ball but Stephens and young Tom Silvester then took their team to the brink of victory by adding 27.
Stephens, having dropped himself down from the 1sts after a lean spell, finished unbeaten on 32, although it was left to David May to hit the winning runs with eight balls left.
