Burnham Sports CC 1st XI v Great Waltham on Sat 30 Jul 2011 at 1.30pm
Burnham Sports CC Lost by 2 wickets

Match report Karl Barnes will be an absentee when Burnham Sports entertain runaway league leaders Great Totham at Millfield on Saturday.
The experienced swing bowler suffered a badly dislocated finger in his team’s two-wicket loss at home to Great Waltham on Saturday and faces an indefinite spell on the sidelines.
Barnes, injured when he spilled a return catch that was smashed back at him, said: “The medics at Basildon Hospital told me that, as dislocations go, it was very impressive.
“Initial efforts to put it back were unsuccessful, so they had to put a couple of injections in the finger to help it relax. After that, it clicked back OK but it’s now heavily strapped and I’m not sure when I’ll be able to play again. Hopefully, it won’t be too long.”
The premature exit of Barnes left Sports with ten players for the bulk of their time in the field and that, coupled with several dropped catches and some clumsy outfielding, proved critical as Great Waltham, chasing 230 to win, edged home with six balls to spare to consolidate second place in the T.Rippon Mid-Essex League first division table.
In an evenly-contested match, Sports responded well after being put in on a green wicket. Opening batsmen Grant Smith (32) and Paul Green (35) put on 68 in fluent fashion before Rob Layzell (23), Ali Allchin (48), Robin Whittaker (28) and Dominic Whittaker (33) built on the platform that they provided.
Waltham were 82 for three after 20 overs of their reply – Burnham had amassed 101 at the same stage – but then Craig Swan clicked into turbo. The destructive opener took the game away from the home side by thumping eight sixes and eight fours in a match-winning innings of 98, before being bowled by Robin Whittaker.
Swan’s dismissal gave Sports renewed hope and they battled back, with Ali Allchin (12-2-31-1) and Whittaker (7-0-25-2) applying the brake. Waltham needed 36 with four wickets in hand from the final five overs and still required 14 from the final dozen deliveries, with only two wickets left.
Andy Stephens (10-2-53-2) was unable to provide a final flourish, though, as Waltham’s clean-hitting tail-enders snatched the spoils.
