Joel Whittaker thrived with bat and ball as Burnham Sports enjoyed a comfortable 78-run win away to Bentley.
The all-rounder hit a fluent 49 to help his team accumulate 209 for seven from their allotted 45 overs and then, for an encore, he took three for 25 from nine overs as Bentley crumbled to 131 all out.
Victory keeps Burnham in the top half of the T.Rippon Mid-Essex League first division but, with only six league matches left, they are going to need a sequence of victories to have any chance of winning promotion.
Paul Green was Whittaker’s main ally with the bat, the stand-in skipper making a gritty 55 on a slowish pitch. The pair put together a match-winning stand of 82 for the second wicket.
Rob Layzell thumped a couple of sixes among the middle order before Jalal Ahmed, playing his first game of the year having been away teaching in Saudi Arabia, marked his return with an unbeaten 33.
Ali Allchin (10-2-24-2) missed out with the bat but quickly make amends, bowling out Bentley’s opening batsmen before either had made double figures.
Fuad Ahmed, 16, the youngest of Jalal’s three brothers, also made an early breakthrough on his way to taking two for 26, before Whittaker indulged himself.
