Match report Inconsistent Burnham Sports were again left to reflect on what might have been after a 23-run loss away to Writtle.
Sports lost the reverse fixture in frustrating circumstances earlier in the season and it was a case of déjà vu – losing a T.Rippon Mid-Essex League first division match that was theirs for the taking.
Chasing 211 to win on a drying pitch, Burnham were cruising at 122 for two with around 20 overs left to bat. However, having built a solid platform, they lost all momentum and ended up requiring 41 from the final four overs with new batsmen at the wicket.
Predictably, the tail-enders were unable to reprieve the situation, with Writtle left to toast the slow-bowling efforts of Gopisetty, who claimed four for 31, and Williamson, who finished with three for 52.
Rob Layzell (31) and Robin Whittaker (27) had given Sports a fluent start before Joel Whittaker (29), Jamie Hamilton (28) and Ali Allchin (28) also got settled. However, none of the quintet could make a match-clinching contribution.
“This is the third match this season that we have lost, having been in control,” Andy Stephens, the Burnham captain, said. “It’s a disappointing flaw – we’ve got to learn how to finish teams off with both bat and ball.”
Earlier, having been put into bat on a damp wicket, Writtle had begun well before Fuad Ahmed (two for 21) and Robin Whittaker (three for 22) abruptly halted their progress. The home side’s tail-enders rallied, though, to leave Burnham lamenting a series of wayward deliveries.
