Great Baddow v Burnham Sports CC 1st XI on Sat 18 Jun 2011 at 1.30pm
Match was Abandoned
Match report
By Ben Burgess
Burnham Sports will be hoping the weather proves kinder when they play Little Waltham at home on Saturday (start 1.30pm).
Sports went into their latest match, away to Great Baddow, having won four of their previous five fixtures, but they were thwarted in their efforts to improve that sequence by heavy rain – the T.Rippon Mid-Essex League first division game being abandoned about 35 minutes after tea.
Burnham were under pressure when the elements intervened, being 28 for two in their pursuit of 235. However, with a long batting order and the pitch playing well, the visiting team had not surrendered hope of turning things around.
“Baddow’s results suggest they are a much stronger batting team than bowling, so who knows what would have happened had it not been washed out,” Andy Stephens, skipper of Sports, said. “We had stacks of batting left in the locker, so it could have gone either way.”
Put into bat, Baddow’s opening batsmen rode their luck to put on 88 in 20 overs before Simmons (41) had his stumps disturbed by Ali Allchin.
Nuttall, his partner, was unperturbed and mixed defence with hard hitting on his way to making 113. He was still at the crease when his team were 185 for two with almost nine overs left but his dismissal, at this stage, slowed his team’s progress.
Allchin (10-0-37-4) was the undisputed pick of the Burnham bowlers, but Karl Barnes and Joel Whittaker also emerged with credit. The agile Jamie Hamilton supported the bowlers really well, clinging on to four catches.
It rained steadily throughout tea but it was dry when Sports began their reply. Paul Green, run out in pursuit of a quick single, fell with the score on 24 and then Whittaker perished to what proved to be the final ball of the game, being caught at mid-off aiming an expansive drive.
A 15-minute deluge then left the square, which was wet before a ball had been bowled, waterlogged.
Burnham’s 2nd XI got in a full game at home to their Easwtood counterparts, thanks in part to their pitch having been covered in the 48 hours leading up to the game.
