Burnham Sports CC 1st XI v Herongate on Sat 11 Jun 2011 at 1.30pm
Burnham Sports CC Won by 4 wickets

Match report Jamie Hamilton and Paul Green played lead roles as in-form Burnham Sports brushed aside Herongate with something to spare at Millfields.
Hamilton, who has swiftly put the nasty eye injury he suffered at Great Waltham last month behind him, picked up four for 41 as Sports dismissed Herongate for a modest 146. Green followed that with a welcome half-century as the home side were not extended to win by four wickets.
Conditions favoured the bowlers – the pitch was damp and weather cloudy – so it was little surprise that Andy Stephens, the Burnham skipper, invited Herongate to bat after winning the toss.
Ali Allchin (6-3-9-1) and Karl Barnes (11-2-25-2) set the tone for the first half of the match, with Hamilton (9-1-41-4) and young Fuad Ahmed (6-2-14-2) building on their efforts. Stephens picked up the other wicket to tumble, although his team would have had even fewer to chase but for a string of dropped catches.
Burnham’s benevolence did not extend to their batting, with Green and Joel Whittaker putting on 69 for the first wicket with few alarms.
Whittaker, standing in as opener for the absent Grant Smith, was eventually deceived by off-spinner Linzell after making 39, the same bowler accounting for Ed King and Sayeid Ahmed soon after.
Green and Allchin (43) took the score to 125 without further loss but, with victory in their sights, both exited. Hamilton also suffered a rare failure but it was all too little, too late for flattered Herongate, Dominic Whittaker putting them out of their misery by slapping the winning boundary through wide mid-wicket.
“It won’t be remembered as one of the most exciting games ever played at our ground, but we got the job done,” Stephens said. “That’s four wins from our past five games and we are building some momentum. It’s important, though, we don’t get ahead of ourselves.”
This Saturday, Sports travel to Great Baddow, who have had a mixed time this term since winning promotion last year. Smith and Rob Layzell return to the fold, but Robin Whittaker, away taking exams at University, will be out for the next fortnight.
