Great Totham v Burnham Sports CC 1st XI on Sat 04 Jun 2011 at 1.30pm
Burnham Sports CC Won by 5 wickets
Match report
Burnham Sports had plenty to cheer after notable wins for both of their teams at the weekend.
The club’s 1st XI won away to Great Totham, the league leaders, in their T.Rippon Mid-Essex League first division match, while the 2nd XI gained a dramatic four-run win at home to Stock 3rds in Division Eight.
Great Totham had won their first four matches with relative ease but were on the backfoot from the moment that Andy Stephens, the Sports captain, won the toss and put them in.
Ali Allchin had the dangerous Barry Mays caught behind by Dominic Whittaker in the third over without a run on the board and that triggered a familiar pattern, with the athletic Whittaker catching out the home team’s first four batsmen. His low, one-handed effort to send back Barwick, again off the bowling of Allchin, was outstanding.
Allchin (9.3-1-42-3) was the main beneficiary of Whittaker’s exploits, with Karl Barnes (7-2-36-3) and Stephens (8-3-18-1) also being indebted to him. Grant Smith ensured the keeper did not hog all the limelight with a remarkable one-handed catch high above his head at mid-wicket.
Jamie Hamilton (6-1-12-2) kept Burnham in control, with Robin Whittaker picking up the other wicket to fall.
Sports had done the hard part but, with the speedy Chalk to deal with on a deteriorating pitch, could not afford to rest on their laurels.
Chalk (12-3-23-3) dismissed Sayeid Ahmed and Smith in his first two overs and the increasingly tricky nature of the pitch was emphasised by strokeplayers Joel Whittaker and Hamilton then playing out five successive maidens.
The pair gradually took control, though, and put together a match-clinching third-wicket stand of 87. Joel, older brother of Dominic, mixed defence and attack on his way to making 55 (he hit two sixes and seven fours), with Hamilton finding the boundary on nine occasions before departing for 49.
It was left to Rob Layzell to thump a four through mid-wicket to secure the spoils. Sports picked up 23 points and will have a spring in their step for this Saturday’s match at home to Herongate (start 1.30pm).
Meanwhile, the 2nd XI were edging home in a yhrilling low-scoring match at Millfields.
