Great Waltham v Burnham Sports CC 1st XI on Sat 28 May 2011 at 1.30pm
Burnham Sports CC Lost lost by 8 wickets
Match report
Brittle Burnham Sports will bid to bounce back from a humiliating defeat when they play away to high-flying Great Totham this Saturday.
Sports were thumped by Great Waltham on their travels last weekend - losing by eight wickets in rapid time after being skittled out for a paltry 77 on a blameless wicket.
“Collectively, we had an awful day at the office,” Andy Stephens, captain of the 1st XI said. “It was a pitch where you needed 250-plus and so the writing was on the wall a long way out.
“We were too bad to be true and I’m inclined to put a line through it and move on. I cannot believe we will bat that poorly again all summer.
“Totham were only relegated from the Premier League on the final day of last season and have begun this campaign as if intent on making a quick return, so we’ll have to be straight back on our A-Game.”
Sports had rattled up 462 runs for the loss of only 12 wickets in winning their previous two matches and so were unperturbed after losing the toss and being invited to bat.
However, the portents were not good from the first over when Grant Smith, who had scored 238 runs in his three previous innings this term, was bowled without troubling the scorer.
The visiting team moved to 43 for two in the tenth over before surrendering to Dave Clout (five for 31) and the young Fitzwater brothers, who claimed the other five wickets between them. Joel Whittaker (26) and Ed King (15) were the only Sports batsmen to muster more than six.
Waltham needed just 13 overs to pass Burnham’s woefully inadequate tally, Stephens and his son, Tom, gaining nothing more than consolation wickets.
