Grant Smith continued his sparkling early-season form as Burnham Sports swept to a convincing victory over early league leaders Bentley at Millfields.
Smith hit a dazzling 96 as Sports, chasing 203 to win, breezed home with almost ten overs to spare in the T.Rippon Mid-Essex League first division fixture. The opener, who was Burnham’s leading batsman last year with an average of 41, had made 72 and 69 in his team’s first two fixtures.
“That’s the best I’ve batted this year,” Smith, who found the boundary on 20 occasions, said. “I didn’t realise I was so close to a hundred but all that matters is that we won. We’ve got a really strong team and are capable of challenging for promotion.”
A youthful Bentley side had skittled their rivals for 80 and 85, respectively, in their first two fixtures and their captain confessed to being satisfied with more than 200 to defend at tea.
However, he had bargained without Smith and Sayeid Ahmed, who were not extended to piece together a stand of 80 in 16 overs.
Sayeid, like his partner, played with great freedom before unluckily playing on, having made 33. Rob Layzell quickly followed him back to the pavilion before Smith and Ali Allchin combined to take their team to the brink of victory with a fluent stand of 93 in 75 balls.
Smith’s dismissal, a tame chip to mid on, came as a surprise but, once he had departed, Allchin wasted little time completing the job. The powerful 18-year-old finished unbeaten on 51, though it was Fuad Ahmed, another teenager, who clipped the winning runs.
Joel Whittaker and Paul Green found themselves surplus to requirements but, earlier, the pair had played their part with the ball. The former finished with fine figures of two for 30 from nine overs, while spinner Green claimed one for 44 from ten. Andy Stephens (two for 30) and Robin Whittaker (two for 37) had taken early wickets, although Bentley were allowed to escape from 86 for five to 202 for seven.
This Saturday, Sports travel to Great Waltham, but will be without Karl Barnes and Layzell. All-rounder Jamie Hamilton hopes to return, though, having had to sit out the Bentley fixture because of the eye injury he suffered in the win over Brookweald the previous week.
