Brookweald v Burnham Sports CC 1st XI on Sat 14 May 2011 at 1.30pm
Burnham Sports CC Won by 8 runs

Match report By Ben Burgess
Jamie Hamilton is a big doubt for Burnham Sports’ clash with Bentley at Millfields on Saturday.
The key all-rounder needed stitches in his left eye after a horrible incident during his team’s dramatic eight-run win away to Brookweald last weekend.
Hamilton was bowling near the finish when a fiercely struck shot flew back at him at face height. He attempted to catch the ball, but it went through his fingers and left him nursing a nasty gash and two swollen black eyes.
“Jamie was in a bad way and, after requiring initial hospital treatment on Saturday night, had to return to see an eye specialist the following day, too,” Andy Stephens, skipper of Sports said. “His left eye was completely swollen and his right one was not much better. We’ll have to see what the next few days bring.”
Hamilton’s injury marred what was a fine win for Sports, although they flirted with losing a match that they seemed to have in safe keeping.
Defending a testing total of 259 for nine from their 45 overs, Brookweald needed 64 from the final four overs, albeit with six wickets in hand.
Amazingly, though, the next three overs, bowled by Ali Allchin and Stephens, yielded 53 runs as Rawlings and Crane took it in turn to smash them all over the ground.
The home team’s momentum was such that they looked favourites needing 11 from the last over, bowled by Stephens, but Rawlings (42) holed out to wide long on first ball and then Crane (34 not out) was unable to score off the next two . Burnham’s relief was completed when the final three balls yielded just a trio of singles.
“It was a remarkable finish and it left us fairly shell-shocked, especially with Jamie walking round looking like an extra from a war movie,” Stephens said. “We’d held the initiative for virtually the whole game, so it would have been hard to swallow had we not finished the job.”
Stephens finished with figures of 9.5-3-37-1, with Hamilton claiming two for 30 before his premature exit. Five catches were shared by the Whittaker brothers – Joel, Robin and Dominic. The highlight was Joel’s first to dismiss Bradley (48) off the bowling of Paul Green, which he grabbed after Allchin had juggled the ball at long on.
Earlier, Sports had responded well after being put into bat. Grant Smith, fresh from scoring 72 the previous week, made another 69, with Joel Whittaker(30), Hamilton (24), Allchin (26),Ed King (21) and Robin Whittaker (20 not out) also making valuable contributions.
Smith hit 13 fours and a six, with Sports also picking up 51 extras – the most anybody can ever remember them accumulating in a game.
The 2’s lost a low-scoring game by four wickets, trying to defend 128. More follows…
